M-I-N...N-I-E...M-O-U-S-E!!

I created Minnie Mouse this morning for a three -year-old birthday girl. People often ask how I make my cakes. They assume I have cakes pan to make various shapes. I don't usually! So now I will show you how I made Minnie...step by step.
First, I need an idea! In this case, I had the napkin from the birthday party. Next, I drew a sketch of Minnie to help me decide what pans to use, and how much cake I needed!

.
Next, I baked a 12" round yellow pound cake using my secret recipe. Then I baked three 8"round cakes using the same recipe. All cake parts went in the freezer overnight. (Frozen cake is easier to work with.) When I was ready to decorate, I cut the cakes into the shapes I needed for Minnie's head, ears, and bow.

The next step is to crumb coat everything. This involves coating everything with a thin layer of vanilla icing. It seals all those cut edges, so the finished cake doesn't have crumbs in the icing.

Everything went back into the freezer so the crumb coat would set more quickly. While I waited I prepared the icing, coloring vanilla icing pale peach for Minnie's face and pink for her bow. I decided to use dark chocolate icing for the ears and the sides of her head. When I finished icing the head and ears, I iced the bow with pink and put it in place. Finally, I used decorating gel and icing to add Minnie's face.
